Sure, Oddzeez make and sell fun, ridiculously good looking mens socks. Of course, we all know that. Yes, they are as sexy as they comfortable – we get it. But there is a deeper, more serious reason as to why Oddzeez exists and why we are out to make a big difference to men around the World. In our first blog post we look at the pressure Men put themselves under, the intense stress this causes them and how their choice of socks might be able to help.
This is the first post of our Oddzeez blog. Trust us, they won’t all be this deep, serious, and long. But we felt it was important to explain to our followers why we are so passionate about bringing more colour, happiness, and optimism into the World. And why it is about more than just socks. Hopefully it also helps the ladies understand their men that little bit more, and makes the men realise they are not alone.
Men are naturally pretty serious creatures. We are proud and we are strong. At least that is what we try to be. Men are meant to the be the protectors of their families and shelter them from anything that could cause harm. Being, or attempting to be, this pillar of strength is a heavy cross to bear. Us men are often criticised for bottling up our emotions, but what our loved ones don’t realise is that we do this to protect them. We absorb the worries and the stress of the World so that they don’t have to.
This is not a new issue, it has been happening for centuries. Times certainly have changed and any decent man fully understands and acknowledges that we are equal to our female counterparts. We expect and deserve the same opportunities and treatment no matter our gender. As time passes the stereotypes slowly start to fade, but us men still feel that duty to provide for and protect our families. It is the same old-fashioned wiring that makes us want to open the door and let a Woman through first, compliment her on her outfit, or make sure we tame our language in her presence. The qualities of what is referred to as a ‘gentleman’. These same qualities are what drive us to regularly take more than we can bear.
It is a topic that thankfully has started to be talked about more within society, and it certainly is a conversation that needs to be continued. In Australia, on average, 1 in 8 men will suffer from Depression and 1 in 5 will experience anxiety at some stage throughout their lives. Being the proud and stubborn creatures we are, only 1 in 4 men will seek professional treatment for these issues. This ultimately leads us to the next mind-blowing stat. In Australia there are roughly 3,000 suicides each year, and 75% of these are men. An average of 6 men take their lives every single day. It is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 54. This is absolutely staggering and highlights the need for change.
Ok, so this is all pretty serious and sombre stuff. Yes its absolutely horrible, but what the hell does that have to do with socks? Fair question, we’ve taken a while to come around to that. Everyone has to wear socks. Whether it be to School, Work, or for a night out – they are a staple fashion item. But what if they could be more than that? What if they could actually make you feel good about yourself? What if you could have fun with them, make them a fashion accessory and a conversation starter? When you hop out of the shower early in the morning and you are getting dressed for work, do you want to open up your sock drawer and stare at a bunch of boring plain socks? Or would you prefer that you are smacked in the face with bright, bold colours, and fun, exciting patterns? Opening up that colourful sock drawer can bring about the first smile for the day and can bring with it unexpected optimism. Getting noticed and receiving compliments at work about your crazy and wacky socks can lighten the mood and make the stresses of the day feel a little less significant.
Sure, we get it – they are just socks. But if our fun socks can brighten up the day of just one man, it is all worth it. Our goal is to bring more colour, more light, and more fun into the everyday lives of the men who wear them. We don’t have to be serious all the time, we don’t have to carry the weight of the World. There are more men than you know that feel exactly the same way you do, and there is absolutely no shame in admitting we are human and that we aren’t the supermen we pretend to be.
So, text a mate. Catch up for a beer and joke about who is wearing the craziest socks. Talk about each others problems. They won’t seem as significant when you say them out loud.
